Winter wellness: Diet for cough and cold | Health


If you see a doctor for an upper respiratory tract illness such as a cold or cough, antibiotics may not be included in your treatment plan. Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial diseases such as pneumonia and are ineffective against viral diseases such as colds, flu and sore throats.

There are now foods in the kitchen that must be included in the regular diet to prevent coughs and colds. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Sushma PS, chief nutritionist at the Jindal Naturecure Institute in Bangalore, argued that having a healthy immune system is a plus during cold and flu season. I have suggested some foods to include in your diet.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a common cough suppressant that also has anti-inflammatory properties. A cup of hot ginger tea relieves his irritating cough and sore throat. Ginger contains chemicals that widen blood vessels in the lungs, relax smooth muscle, and open airways. To treat coughs, add fresh ginger slices or grated ginger to hot tea.

2. Garlic

Garlic helps treat colds and flu. It promotes faster recovery and has other health benefits. If you have raw garlic, you can add it to the soup.Garlic contains immune-boosting compounds that have therapeutic benefits and can be incorporated into your daily diet.

3. Raw honey

Raw honey has a wide range of medicinal benefits, especially for respiratory problems. For best results, use 1 tablespoon of honey and 2 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice and water. Lemons are antioxidants and energizing.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric milk is well known in India as a home remedy for almost all ailments. It is an effective home remedy for sore throats and coughs. Turmeric is advantageous because it contains curcumin. Curcumin gives turmeric its yellow color and has anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric strengthens the immune system and activates the antibody response to infection. For immediate relief, mix turmeric and black pepper.

5. Pineapple

It may surprise you, but pineapple is an effective cough suppressant. Bromelain is an enzyme in pineapple that has anti-inflammatory and mucolytic (mucus-breaking) effects. These two properties of bromelain make pineapple a good cough suppressant.

6. Pomegranate

Pomegranate juice is rich in antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds. Contains flavonoid antioxidants that fight viruses and shorten the duration of colds by up to 40%. Pomegranate juice can be drunk daily.

7. Tea

Drink warm tea (green tea, black tea, herbal tea) when you have a cough or a cold. Teas with antioxidants can soothe a sore throat, liquefy mucus from a stuffy nose, and help clear nasal passages. Chamomile tea also has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile tea promotes sleep and helps protect the immune system.

8. Pumpkin Seeds

Pumpkin seeds are rich in zinc, a mineral that the body needs for the normal functioning of white blood cells. White blood cells are needed to fight infectious diseases such as the flu virus. You can eat it in handfuls or sprinkle it on salads to add crunch.

9. Vegetable soup

If you have the flu, drink a glass of vegetable soup seasoned with ginger, garlic, turmeric and black pepper. To relieve nasal congestion, soups and steam from soups accelerate the flow of mucus down the nose. A nutritious soup can also help reduce inflammation. Drinking hot soup can boost your immune system and protect you from bacteria and viruses.

10. Vegetable juice

Vegetables contain antioxidants that help the immune system function. Vegetable juices may help you recover faster from illnesses such as the flu. For you, a glass of vegetable juice is the ideal remedy. You can incorporate vegetables with antiviral properties such as carrots and spinach.
