Dietary supplements (vitamins, herbs, botanicals you can find at most grocery stores) are everywhere. More than half of her 20+ adults in the U.S. take them, and she will spend about $50 billion on vitamins and other supplements in 2021.
The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recently released a major new evaluation of supplements. “They say there’s insufficient evidence that healthy Americans use multivitamins to prevent heart disease and cancer,” says Dr. Jenny Jia. Co-authored an editorial for the Medical Association on the new guidelines and their impact on consumers. It is titled Multivitamins and Supplements – Benign Prevention or Potentially Harmful Distractions?
